Die Kantonsbibliothek Graubünden ging 1883 aus der Bibliothek der Kantonsschule Graubünden hervor. In der Verordnung über die Kantonsbibliothek Graubünden ist ihr Auftrag definiert. Die Hauptaufgabe besteht in der Erfüllung des regionalen Sammelauftrags, nämlich die Raetica-Sammlung zu vertiefen, zu erschliessen, zu vermitteln und zu konservieren. Zusätzlich übernimmt die Kantonsbibliothek Graubünden die Funktion einer wissenschaftlichen Regionalbibliothek, in dem sie die drei Hochschulen, den Forschungsstandort Graubünden sowie die wissenschaftlich interessierte Kundschaft mit entsprechenden Informationsmittel versorgt.
