Der Verein "Volksbibliothek Oberwil" wurde 1956 gegründet.
1988 wurde der Name geändert in "Gemeindebibliothek Oberwil".
Seit Mai 2001 befindet sich die Gemeindebibliothek im umgebauten ehemaligen Lager- und Verwaltungsgebäude der Birseck'schen Consum- und Produktionsgenossenschaft.
